Wigs4Kids Townsville Fundraiser

By Robert Mackie Join Me

I'm raising money to help relieve the financial burden from families that have a child being treated for a cancer diagnosis.

I am cutting my hair to fundraise to support the creation of bespoke wigs for children, provide essential financial assistance to families in need, and funding within paediatric oncology hospitals across the country, ensuring that every child facing cancer receives the care and support they deserve.

Please support me in my fundraising journey, together we can make today easier for kids with cancer and their families.

My Updates

Hair is cut and sent

Saturday 15th Aug
Hair has been cut and sent as per wigs4kids instructions.

I want to thank everyone already who has donated to this cause. We are over $1600 of an original $1000 goal.

I have updated the goal to $3333 as the cost to make a wig is $3300.
If we hit the new goal I will also have my beard for 'funsies'.

Updated fundraising goal

Wednesday 12th Aug
So the hair is coming off Thursday 12 August.

I have also updated the fundraising goal to $3333. The reason being that some of my colleagues would also love to see the beard go.
If we hit $3333 the beard will also be removed.

It costs $3300 to make a wig. Let's get there!

Helping where we can

Friday 7th Aug
For those of you who don't know me, or only know me peripherally, my name is Robert.
I am fortunate enough that I have never received a cancer diagnosis, nor has any of the children in my extended family, that I am aware of.

My chosen field of work, however, does bring me occasionally into this world.
I am a medical laboratory scientist. We are the people who work behind the scenes and do all the testing that allows a treating doctor to make the most informed decisions for diagnosis and treatment of patients. It is an extremely rewarding profession that has highs and lows.
The lowest of lows for me personally is phoning a doctor to tell them that their paediatcric patients results are highly suggestive of leukaemia. At this stage further testing is still required to determine specifics.
This is not an everyday occurrence.  I have only had to make a handful of these specific calls to doctors in the decade I have been working in this field.  It isnt fun, and I do not envy the conversation that the treating physician has to have with that family.

Being in a regional location I know that this patient and their family will, within 24hrs, likely be on a plane to Brisbane for treatment. The costs associated with that are not cheap. Accommodation, food, travel, etc. We are very lucky that our socialised healthcare system covers the bulk of the treatment costs.
This is where donating to charities such as wigs4kids is most helpful. Helping to cover the peripheral costs. There is information on their website for more specific information on what they help with.

I will also be donating my hair for this.  It has been growing since Covid and is pretty much a part of my personality now.  I think some of my colleagues will be upset that I am keeping the beard.
This is a small part of what I can do as an individual, as it only takes time to grow my hair. But allowing a child to have some normality during a process that can physically change their appearance during some of the most formative time of ther lives, is the least I can do.

Every dollar helps someone in need.
