Carrot tops for kids

Your support counts

My ginger locks have had a good run, but now they’re off to a much more important job — giving confidence and comfort to kids who really need it.

Some people say redheads are going extinct, but I like to think I’m doing my part to repopulate the world with carrot tops — one wig at a time. Think of it as my contribution to the preservation of the species.

But here’s the thing: while the hair donation is huge, turning that hair into real, wearable wigs takes time, skill, and money. That’s where this fundraiser comes in. Every dollar raised goes towards making these wigs possible, helping kids feel like themselves again while they tackle something no child should have to face.

So, if you’ve ever admired my ginger mane, like the idea of Chelsea hacking off my hair, or simply want to support an incredible cause, please consider donating. Big or small, every dollar makes a difference.

I figured if I was going to be asking all of you for your support, I’d over share a little about why I’ve been donating my hair for the last decade to make wigs for kids and women with cancer.

When I was around eighteen, a woman who was basically my aunt was diagnosed with leukaemia and passed away shortly afterward. Carolyn was such an important figure in my childhood and while undergoing chemotherapy, she experienced substantial hair loss, like so many do. For me, I remember her always with these beautiful blonde locks and it hit fairly hard to see someone I loved going through this. Then, mid-shower one day, I spotted a Pantene bottle promoting a campaign for people to donate hair to make wigs for women with cancer. It was so simple, but in that moment, I decided to cut my hair into a bob, for the first time since I was a little girl.

The next time I cut my hair was just before I went travelling in 2017. Knowing long hair would be hard to maintain while backpacking across Europe, I broke out the kitchen scissors and we cut the curls back up to my shoulders once again.

A few years past and I’d grown my hair long (all the way down to my hip) during COVID since hair appointments were so difficult under the restrictions. Then, the day before my long-awaited appointment in 2021, Sydney went back into lockdown. Enough was enough - I woke up and decided to hack it off. No one was going to see it in lockdown, after all. So once again, out came the kitchen scissors and off came another half metre of hair.

Now, four years on, I’m ready for a summer chop. Fortunately, I have Chelsea’s hairstyling talents in my life this time so the kitchen scissors will remain in the drawer. And while I won’t be going quite so short as I have previously, I plan to cut at least 20cm to donate. If you can, please offer your support - it means a lot xx
