Gemma Botes

I'm raising money to help relieve the financial burden from families that have a child being treated for a cancer diagnosis.

I did a thing.

A crazy beautiful thing.

Something I have often thought about.

Then I learnt I could also raise awareness , money and give confidence for a beautiful cause by doing it.

So I did that thing.

I cut my hair and will be donating it to Kids with Cancer Foundation who work directly with Ella Wigmakers.

This beautiful duo makes beautiful things for beautiful minis and their families.

Wigs 4 Kids™

My hair will be used to make a wig and any donations will continue to help Kids with Cancer Foundation to support families as they work through the challenging times of childhood cancer.

Did you know?!

•To donate your hair you only need a minimum length of 20cm

•One wig costs $2750 and takes about 60 hours to make.

•Ella Wigs will accept dyed hair, including semi-permanent, foils, bleach, henna or chemically straightened

•Each wig is carefully matched to the child’s natural colour and style to make them feel more confident

I hope to raise enough to fund the cost of one wig for a beautiful mini who didn’t ask nor deserves this battle.

To help change a sick minis life by making them feel more confident.

We know how we feel when get our hair done!

How can you help?!

I am pleased you asked!

By sharing this page with your family and friends, together we can all make a difference.

We can do a thing together xo

Why I did that thing?!

Tuesday 30th Apr

Good question!

Not that anyone has really asked as their initial response when they see me is…

‘oh wow you cut your hair, it looks gooood and suits you’.

I quickly respond with …

‘thanks, I actually donated my hair to Kids for Cancer Foundation and decided last minute to do a fundraiser as well’.

That is usually followed up by an even better and beautiful compliment.

I’m not one for compliments so usually I will either act awkward or sidetrack the conversation.

Yes, I did donated my hair.

I made this choice.

BUT this isn’t about me.

This is about the minis.

The beautiful minis who don’t have a choice nor deserve the battle they are facing.

A friend recently did a fundraiser.

She sadly lost her brother at a very young age to cancer.

I had anyways wanted to do a chop so when I saw her post, I did some research.

I found Kids for Cancer Foundation.

I messaged the link to my hair dresser and said ‘as you know I’ve been considering a CHOP for a wee while. It got me thinking, if my hair is longer enough I’ll do this’.

In my previous blog, I mentioned I only told three people - my hair dresser and two friends.

When I told my friend said ‘send me the details of your fundraiser so I can donate’.

I quickly replied ‘I’m not doing a fundraiser, I am just donating my hair’.

She said ‘why not’.

I sat on her ‘why not’ for a day and thought ‘why not’?!

Let’s donate hair, raise awareness and funds for this beautiful cause.

So here we are.

Raising awareness and money to support the families as they work through the challenging times ahead.

It takes 60 hours to make a wig, I have decided to fundraise for 60 days.

I will do weekly blog and share my on instagram with a link to my fundraiser as a minimum.

As they say, ‘a shared load is half the load and a shared joy is double the joy’.

We can do little things together xo

I know I know I did it backwards …

Wednesday 24th Apr
I know some will be wondering …
‘don’t you fundraise before the chop’?!
And yes, you are absolutely right.
BUUUT for those that know me it wouldn’t be me if I did it that way.
I did not want the main drive for this fundraising to be on a choice I could make, to chop my hair.
This is for the minis who did not have a choice.
This is to raise awareness and money to support the families as they work through the challenging times ahead.
A choice they had no control over.
So sometimes it is okay to do something a little different.
It’s okay to do a little thing that can make a big difference to someone else’s life xo

… it’s almost time

Wednesday 24th Apr
Let me start off my saying … eeeek!

I write this as I sit in my car before I head in to see my hairdresser.

I have only told three people and can confirm, it is not the three humans I live with. I can’t wait to see their reactions. I have wonder if my minis would recognise me, time will tell and I can’t wait to share it with you.
Those I have told, I only mentioned I’m doing a chop so to be able to surprise my nearest and dearest with the results and why, raise awareness, give confidence to a beautiful mini and hopefully get some donations it honestly brings me so much joy.

How lucky we are to be able to have the option to chop or shave our hair.
I always imagined when I did the chop, it would be so I could tie my hair back.
The thing about today, I have no idea how short my hair will be as we need to minimum 20cm.

Okay, it is time guys!
I look forward to sharing the final results and see what we can do for Kids with Cancer Foundation.

We can do little things together xo
