SFoAc Sunshine Day

By St Francis of Assisi College, Renmark Join Me

This year our school is making the chop to raise much needed funds and awarness for families affected by childhood cancer!

After donating my hair for the first time in 2020, I have continued to grow the event through 2022 and 2024, seeing contributions double each event! The event will be returning this year, but with a twist; a greater focus on involving others in the conversation and giving other students the opportunity to stand up and make the chop!

Each year almost 800 children aged 0-14 are diagnosed with cancer in Australia, resulting in almost 90 deaths each year. Almost half of the diagnoses in 2020 were in children aged 0-4. The Australian Government has allocated $112.6 million dollars to the ZERO Childhood Cancer program, which provides medication. But Cancer doesn’t only affect people physically. Children who lose their hair to cancer are profoundly impacted, as it shapes interaction and self-perception. Providing bespoke wigs to children affected by hair loss, free of charge “helps children feel more comfortable and confident during treatment”- leading to better outcomes.
