Year 12 Student Cutting Hair
Monday 25th AugHi!
my name is Natika, and I’m currently a Year 12 student in my final weeks of high school. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve had long hair. Coming from an Indian background, long hair is not only seen as the norm for many Indian women, but it’s also considered highly desirable in India’s beauty standards.
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on what my hair means to me and how it connects to my self-esteem. In today’s world, beauty standards for women have skyrocketed to unrealistic levels, and so often we’re made to feel like our worth is defined by how we look. For me, I’ve realized that while hair can play a big role in how we feel about ourselves (it can boost confidence, bring comfort, and even hold cultural meaning) our true beauty is not defined by our hair, or by our skin, nose, lips, or eyes. Real beauty comes from within, from how we treat others and the love we show to ourselves.
At the same time, our hair holds memories and I understand how important it is to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. If I can share my journey and help even one other young person feel proud of who they are, regardless if they "fit" society’s beauty standards or not, then I think that’s worth everything.
