Grenadiers Girls for the 'Spirit of George'

By Mackenzie, Layla & Charlize

We are raising money to help relieve the financial burden from families that have a child being treated for a cancer diagnosis.

Hi!

We are Layla, Charlize and Mackenzie! We are cutting our hair to donate and fundraise to support the creation of bespoke wigs for children, provide essential financial assistance to families in need, and funding within paediatric oncology hospitals across the country. This is to ensure that every child facing cancer receives the care and support they deserve.

We are cutting off our locks in honour of George McNees who, at the age of 9, lost his lifelong battle with brain cancer in 2024.

We will be getting the chop at Warrane Basketball Stadium on Saturday the 15th of August 2026 at the 'Spirit of George' basketball tournament, hosted by Basketball United. This tournament embodies and embraces George’s character, by emphasising courage, determination, sportsmanship and respect.

We all became close friends this year after joining the Grenadiers Basketball Club, for whom George also played. We discovered that we have all individually had the long-term goal of growing our hair to donate to charity – and we thought what better way than to come together to honour George at his tournament and help make life a little easier for kids with cancer and their families.

Please support our fundraising journey!
